HEADLINES: Discovering regrowth after BWCA forest fires (MN) For the third time in five years, fire had dramatically changed the face
of the Boundary Waters and the western end of the Gunflint Trail. To see
first hand how nature recovers from fire, WCCO-TV toured the area with
University of Minnesota Forestry Professor, Lee Frelich. http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_239215257.html OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99831 ----------------------------- Technique, safety key to tree climbing (WI) A year ago, Tammy Spitzer never thought she'd be swinging through the
trees. When she applied for a job with the city of Milwaukee's urban
forestry department, the 28-year-old mother of four envisioned "planting
flowers and mowing lawns." She learned you need seniority for those
jobs. http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=207221&ntpid=1
OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99832 ----------------------------- ATFS recognizes family Forest Stewardship plans approved by DNR as
meeting certification requirements (WA) The Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the American
Tree Farm System(r) (ATFS) announced that ATFS certification universally
recognizes DNR-approved multi-resource Forest Stewardship Plans as
meeting management planning requirements for family forest landowners. http://www.dnr.wa.gov/htdocs/adm/comm/2007_news_releases/nr07_097.html
OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99821 ----------------------------- Scientists hope a weevil works wonders (PA) In magnification, with its bizarre long snout, the insect - a weevil
known as R. latipes - looks almost comical, like something Dr. Seuss
would have created. Here's what it's up against: a barbed vine aptly
named mile-a-minute. It can grow 20 feet in a summer. It engulfs
landscapes, blanketing fields and shrubs, climbing trees, snuffing out
plant life. Ultimately, the related and complex web of bugs, birds and
other species fades as well. http://www.philly.com/inquirer/front_page/20070826_Scientists_hope_a_wee
vil_works_wonders_.html OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99823 ----------------------------- Wildlife dying out in dense evergreen forests (OR) The traditional emphasis on dense, fast growing, conifer forests in the
Pacific Northwest raises questions about the health of dozens of bird
and animal species that depend on shrubs, herbs and broadleaf trees,
suggests a new analysis by Oregon State University and the U.S.
Geological Survey. http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/aug2007/2007-08-24-097.asp OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99827 ----------------------------- A new mission for NASA: fight wildfires from the sky NASA is known for putting men on the moon, a high-powered telescope in
space and rovers on Mars. But fighting wildfires? Not so much. Yet the
space agency currently is working with the U.S. Forest Service to send a
pilotless drone above several major blazes, providing fire officials
real-time infrared images of hot spots and flare-ups. http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_6757495?nclick_check=1 OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99830 ----------------------------- International Paper wraps around Russia International Paper recycled bad news into good on Friday, announcing an
investor-friendly $1.5 billion five-year investment in Russia after a
week of mill closures and union agreements in the U.S. http://www.forbes.com/markets/emergingmarkets/2007/08/17/international-p
aper-russia-markets-equity-cx_ll_0817markets18.html OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99816 ----------------------------- Japan eyes chopsticks for biofuel Japan will try to turn the millions of wooden chopsticks that go
discarded each year into biofuel to ease the country's energy shortage,
officials said Wednesday. Biofuels are seen as an alternative clean
energy resource that can reduce dependence on Middle East oil and lessen
the impact of global warming. Japan has virtually no natural energy
resources of its own. http://www.energy-daily.com/reports/Japan_eyes_chopsticks_for_biofuel_99

INFORMATION Radio: Xerox Creates Cheap, Eco-Friendly Printer Paper Xerox, one of the world's largest purveyors of copy machines and
printing supplies, has made a new environmentally friendly copy paper.
Xerox says the paper requires half as many trees to make and less than
other green papers before it. But it's not clear whether consumers will
go for it. Listen at: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=13857891
