HEADLINES: Debate runs deep over ATV use in state forest (MN) The battle over the Cloquet Valley State Forest is a microcosm of the
ATV issue on public lands statewide. ATV supporters - along with the
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources trails division and the St.
Louis County Board of Commissioners - say designating the forest as
managed will make it easier for OHV riders to find a place to ride and
obey the law. Some say it will help attract tourism to the region.
Opponents of the managed designation have formed Friends of the Cloquet
Valley State Forest. They hope to promote sustainable use of the forest
on other issues as well. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/articles/index.cfm?id=44258§ion=Non

when he founded Prairie Restorations Inc., which today employs 102
people and operates six service centers, three production centers and
two retail stores. http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_6172544 OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99063 ----------------------------- Third crack found in forested area on Hawaii's Kilauea, threatening rare
plants and species A third large crack has formed on Kilauea, one of the world's most
active volcanoes, park officials said Wednesday. A forest area that is
home to rare plants and species could be in danger. http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=12997 OR

the world. The winery, based in Turner Oregon, recently earned
Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance and plans on
using cork stoppers harvested from responsibly managed forestlands in
all its bottles. http://www.fsc.org/keepout/en/content_areas/29/87/files/FSC_PUB_20_05_04

of Interior spruce trees will be followed in a week or 10 days by the
"Invasion of the Spruce Budworm Moth," the final stage of the pesky
insects. http://newsminer.com/2007/06/19/7557 OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99058 ----------------------------- Conservancy buys large area of Adirondack wilderness (NY) The last big piece of privately owned timberland in the Adirondacks - a
craggy 161,000-acre wilderness of hardwood forests, 80 mountain peaks,
70 crystal-clear lakes and ponds, undammed rivers, white water gorges
and secluded bogs - has been sold for $110 million to the Nature
Conservancy, in a move intended to protect the land from future
development. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/19/nyregion/19adirondacks.html?_r=3&ref=n

http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99062 ----------------------------- Money to burn: The threat of forest fires isn't going away (Canada) For years British Columbians have been warned about the growing threat
of forest fires, especially in the "interface," where communities
encroach on the woods. The auditor-general delivered a cautionary --
and, as it turned out, prophetic -- report in 2001 on the fire risk in
the "wildland-urban interface" Then came the 2003 fire season, ranked as
one of the worst in provincial history. http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=cfabc2c5-9fdd-4025

http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=99054 ----------------------------- Impacts of industrial logging in central Africa studied Though the dense humid forests of Central Africa have been regarded as
among the most pristine on Earth, the expansion of industrial logging
and the accompanying proliferation of road density are threatening the
future of this important ecosystem. Woods Hole Research Center
scientists are using satellite imagery taken from 1976 to 2003 to study
the development of industrial logging and road density in Central Africa
so that scientists, conservation agencies and other organizations can
better understand the trends and implications of such expansion. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/06/070608093811.htm OR

EVENTS Insects, Disease, and How Trees Grow
June 28, 2007, Preston, MN This class covers tree growth and some factors that can alter tree
growth, for better and for worse. You'll learn the basic parts of a tree
and how they fit together. You'll know more about how, when, and why to
prune your trees the right way. We'll also discuss insect and disease
ecology and how some important pests are likely to affect your trees. At
the end of this session, you'll know how trees grow, how to help them
grow well, and how to protect your forest from insect threats. Contact Angela Gupta at 888-241-4536 or agupta@umn.edu or see

conservation planner Randall Arendt, will focus on the process and
techniques that enable developers and local officials to work together
to accomplish residential development while maintaining the natural
elements of contiguous parcels. It also will describe how this design
process can fit into the local regulatory framework through specific
provisions in comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, and subdivision
regulations. Contact St. John's Arboretum at 320- 363-3163 or see

Region
August 20, 2007, Baraboo, WI This Aldo Leopold Shack Seminar will discuss new non-lethal management
tools currently being tested and developed for reducing wolf-human
conflicts such as livestock depredation. These tools offer an
opportunity for more proactive management of wolf-human conflict by
farmers. Join in a discussion of a history of wolf management as it
pertains to tools that are used to reduce livestock losses from wolves
and develop the concept that farmers need to be included as more active
participants in wolf management.

INFORMATION Blog: Vital Forests Vital Communities The Blandin Foundation's Vital Forests/Vital Communities initiative
seeks to develop and implement strategies that promote the connection
between a healthy forest-based economy, a healthy forest ecosystem and
healthy communities. This blog is the latest communication tool for
updates and information related to the initiative. http://vfvc.wordpress.com ----------------------------- Funding Opportunity: National Forest Restoration Working Partnership
Grants The Forest Service is offering a one-time grant opportunity to highlight
examples of landscape-scale partnerships involving forest restoration
and the use of woody biomass. Funding is provided to support 10-12
projects, which demonstrate working partnerships among Conservation
Districts, Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Councils, State
Foresters, local government, and community-based groups. For more information see

PUBLICATIONS A Review of the Six-County Cooperative Forest Certification Project The Blandin Foundation provided financial and operational support to six
northern Minnesota counties to cooperatively undertake the process of
preparing themselves for certification under one or both of the major
certification programs, SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and FSC
(Forest Stewardship Council). This paper presents the findings and
conclusions of a project review, which was based on interviews with the
six Land Commissioners and the project consultant. http://www.blandinfoundation.org/html/documents/Six%20County%20Certifica

http://www.forestrycenter.org/library.cfm?refid=99044 ----------------------------- Close to Slavery: Guestworker Programs in the United States This report is based on interviews with thousands of guestworkers, a
review of the research on guestworker programs, scores of legal cases
and the experiences of legal experts from around the country. The abuses
described here are too common to blame on a few "bad apple" employers.
They are the foreseeable outcomes of a system that treats foreign
workers as commodities to be imported as needed without affording them
adequate legal safeguards or the protections of the free market. Find more information and download the report at:
http://www.splcenter.org/legal/guestreport/index.jsp ----------------------------- Balancing Ecology and Economics: A Start-up Guide for Forest Owner
Cooperation This is the second edition of a guide is intended to show how private
landowners, working together, can improve the ecological conditions of
their lands while improving their own economic well-being and that of
the communities in which their forest land is located. It provides
essential information on all aspects of establishing a forest owner
cooperative, including: forest management, marketing, business planning,
co-op governance, cooperative structures, non-timber forest products,
sustainable certification, developing member education programs, and
more. The guide is available online at
