HEADLINES: Gunflint Lake evacuated as fire spreads (MN) As strong west wind gusts whipped the southern flank of the destructive
Ham Lake fire into a frenzy, authorities expanded a mandatory evacuation
to include Gunflint, Loon and Tucker Lakes this afternoon. The
evacuation essentially closes the last 22 miles of the 60-mile-long
Gunflint Trail. http://www.startribune.com/462/story/1174946.html OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98551 ----------------------------- Nature Conservancy land purchase protects lakeshore and northern forest
(WI) Located in the heart of Wisconsin's Northwoods, The Nature Conservancy's
Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area is a haven for wildlife and outdoor
enthusiasts alike. The Conservancy announced that it has purchased an
additional 322 acres from the heirs of Catherine Wolter, which will be
conserved. http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/wisconsin/press/pr

http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98550
----------------------------- New financing program open to landowners and loggers (ME) The Maine Forestry Direct Link Loan Program is administered by the Maine
Forest Service in partnership with the Department of Environmental
Protection, the Maine Municipal Bond Bank, and local lenders. The
program provides an incentive for landowners and loggers to purchase
certain equipment that will help reduce pollution risk on logging
operations. http://www.maine.gov/tools/whatsnew/index.php?topic=MFS+News&id=37367#Ar
ticle OR http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98515 ----------------------------- Timber (and its revenues) decline, and libraries suffer (OR) It was 99 years ago that the federal government took control of much of
the rugged Oregon landscape, eventually arranging to pay counties part
of the proceeds from what then seemed an infinite expanse of timber to
cut. In April, Jackson County did the unthinkable. It closed all 15 of
its public libraries, because their operating money, the timber money,
is gone. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/05/us/05timber.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98543 ----------------------------- What's good for state's forests is certifiably good for everyone (WA) The Washington Department of Natural Resources took an important step
forward in announcing its intent to seek Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) certification for 141,000 acres of state forests in the Puget
Sound region. The department's decision was spurred on by the efforts of
several regional conservation organizations and by rapidly developing
markets for wood products that are harvested and manufactured with the
environment in mind. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2003698749_forests09.html
OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98545 ----------------------------- Sale of carbon credits helping land-rich, but cash-poor, tribes On the Nez Perce reservation here, land that was cleared in the 19th
century for farming is being converted back to forest, in part to sell
the trees' ability to sequester carbon. The market for carbon credits
promises to be a boon for some land-rich but cash-poor tribes. Selling
carbon sequestration credits early in the growth of a forest lets the
tribe realize some money more quickly, rather than waiting for decades
for the harvest. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/08/science/earth/08carb.html?_r=1&oref=sl
ogin&pagewanted=all OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98548 ----------------------------- Uganda forest faces bulldozers, species at risk Uganda has suffered violent protests in recent weeks over government
plans to give at least 7,100 hectares (17,500 acres) of Mabira Forest, a
nature reserve since 1932, to a sugar cane company. Critics say razing
it could devastate a fragile environment, sparking soil erosion, drying
up the climate and removing a buffer against pollution for Lake
Victoria. http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=12740 OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=98528 ----------------------------- Dutch efforts to get FSC into the public eye An FSC public awareness campaign has begun in the Netherlands. This
yearly campaign is run to increase Dutch consumer recognition of the FSC
brand, and the support and purchase of FSC wood and paper products. On
completion of the campaign, a market survey testing brand recognition of
the FSC trademark will determine whether there is an increase from the
current recognition of 55%. http://www.fsc.org/keepout/en/content_areas/29/87/files/FSC_PUB_20_05_04

INFORMATION Apply Now: Community Forestry Week in Washington The National Community-Based Forestry Week in Washington is a workshop
designed to build capacity among forest practitioners to effectively
participate in the national policy dialogue. Participants will receive
training on how national policy is developed and will learn how to
translate their concerns and issues into effective policy messages. They
will present these messages at meetings and briefings with key
representatives from federal agencies and Congressional committees and
begin to establish relationships for long term success in national
policy. This year's workshop will focus specifically on private lands
issues and will look at a major legislative opportunity, the Farm Bill,
to explore and develop ideas for how community-based forestry
practitioners across the country can engage and network in discussions
about this issue. Contact Wendy Gerlitz at (503)449-0009 or wgerlitz@nnfp.org or see
http://www.nnfp.org ----------------------------- Wisconsin: New Rules Restrict Movement of Firewood to State Campgrounds To help prevent the spread of pests and to protect neighborhood trees
and state parks, forests and natural areas, new state rules prohibit
bringing firewood into Wisconsin from outside the state. Rules also
prohibit brining firewood from more than 50 miles away into all
Department of Natural Resources managed properties including state parks
and forests. For more information see http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/news/#art3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------

PUBLICATIONS SAF Report: The State of America's Forests The forestlands of the United States tell a fascinating story about
humankind and its relationship with the land. It is a story of trial and
error, of consumption and conservation, and of conflict and
collaboration. Indeed, America's forests have their problems. Insects
and disease, invasive weeds, unmanaged recreation, fragmentation, and
land conversion are each having an effect on forests from coast to coast
and providing a formidable challenge to the know-how and talent of the
natural resources profession. And yet, as this report suggests, there
remain reasons to be optimistic. http://www.safnet.org/aboutforestry/StateOfAmericasForests.pdf OR http://www.forestrycenter.org/library.cfm?refid=98519 ----------------------------- Initial Estimates of Hurricane Katrina Impacts on Mississippi Gulf Coast
Forest Resources This study confirms initial reports following Hurricane Katrina that
found the massive storm left forests in south Mississippi with
widespread damage. The study included contractors and federal forest
crews and determined that nearly 90 percent of the region's woods
sustained some damage as a result of the Aug. 29, 2005 hurricane. http://www.mfc.state.ms.us/pdf/katrin_impacts_gulf_Coast.pdf OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/library.cfm?refid=98541 ----------------------------- Balancing Ecology and Economics: A Start-up Guide for Forest Owner
Cooperation This is the second edition of a guide is intended to show how private
landowners, working together, can improve the ecological conditions of
their lands while improving their own economic well-being and that of
the communities in which their forest land is located. It provides
essential information on all aspects of establishing a forest owner
cooperative, including: forest management, marketing, business planning,
co-op governance, cooperative structures, non-timber forest products,
sustainable certification, developing member education programs, and
more. The guide is available online at
