HEADLINES: U.S. Forest Service releases controversial management plan for near Ely
(MN) A plan aimed to restore a northern Minnesota forest to how it once
looked, has conservationists worried. The Forest Service plan is to
manage thousands of acres near the Echo Trail, north of Ely. Forest
Service officials say the project will use logging, replanting, and road
closings to help bring the forest closer to how it may have looked a
century ago. But some conservation groups worry about logging planned in
areas considered roadless. http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2007/02/02/echotrail/ OR http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97276 ----------------------------- Tree in county forest may help fight disease (WI) Foresters looking for butternut trees resistant to a disease known as
butternut canker need look no farther than Pierce County's stewardship
demonstration forest on Ellsworth's northwest side. A crew from the
state's USDA Forest Service took a sample from an apparently healthy
tree there Tuesday. County Forester Gary Zielske had specially marked
for their purposes the straight and tall specimen, which he estimated
stands over 90 feet high. http://www.piercecountyherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=12015&CFID=18419

http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97278 ----------------------------- Guitar makers band together to save vital timber (AK) Between them, they have produced instruments used by some of the world's
most famous musicians - Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Paul Simon are
just a handful of performers who have picked up their guitars and
strummed. Now this group of guitar makers has come together in an
effort to preserve the threatened Alaskan forests that provide the
timber for a crucial part of their instruments. At the current rates of
cutting, they say, the Sitka spruce, in particular the older trees which
are vital to the sound and performance of their guitars, could be gone
in a decade. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/article2201563.ece
OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97280 ----------------------------- Neighbors use high-tech tools to challenge logging plan (CA) Armed with high-tech cameras, mapping software and a helicopter flown by
a nemesis of Barbra Streisand, neighbors opposing a plan by San Jose
Water Co. to log 1,000 acres in the Los Gatos Creek watershed claim they
have found the plan's Achilles' heel. Aerial photos and a detailed
computer analysis show that the water company owns at least 2,754 acres
of timberland containing redwood and Douglas fir trees, opponents said
outside a public forum Wednesday. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/technology/16598865.
htm OR http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97263 ----------------------------- Old lumber builds niche (WA) If landfills had feelings, they'd hate Scott Royer. The owner of
Windfall Lumber, Royer has carved out a boutique niche in Washington's
wood-products industry by recycling castoff wood into flooring, moldings
and countertops rather than see it carted off to the dump. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2003494781_wind
fall26.html OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97265 ----------------------------- Proposal to sell forest land back in Bush budget Last year's plan by the Bush administration to sell National Forest land
to help balance the federal budget was so unpopular it died without a
vote, but it's back again this year.
President Bush's fiscal 2008 Forest Service budget, released this week,
includes a plan similar to last year's that would dump so-called surplus
lands to the highest bidder. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/articles/index.cfm?id=35232§ion=New
s OR
http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97267 ----------------------------- PEFC certified wood recommended by German Timber Procurement Policy The German Government announced that it will exclusively buy timber and
timber products from proven legal and sustainable forest management.
PEFC certification will be used as a means of providing such proof. http://www.pefc.org/internet/html/news/4_1154_65/5_1105_1469.htm OR http://www.forestrycenter.org/headlines.cfm?refid=97257 ----------------------------- Indonesia's push for biofuels If the Indonesian government has its way, another 5m hectares (12m
acres) of land in Kalimantan and elsewhere will be turned over to
companies growing biofuel crops like oil palm, cassava or sugar cane.
Global demand for alternative fuels is growing, and Alhilal Hamdi, head
of Indonesia's new Biofuels Development Board, says now is the time for
his country to tap into it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6320285.stm OR
