----------------------------- Losing the Forest for the Trees: Tree Monocultures and the Biofuel Boom
(World)
Americas Program, CIP Using trees for fuel as part of the agrofuels boom means cultivation of
massive monoculture tree plantations. They are already present in Chile,
Uruguay, and Brazil to supply lumber as well as paper pulp, and due to
the destruction of biodiversity this model has encountered opposition by
civil society groups and indigenous peoples whose rural livelihoods are
at stake. http://americas.irc-online.org/am/5193 OR

- EVENTS Smallwood 2008 and Bioenergy& Wood Products Conference
May 13-15, 2008, Madison, WI The SmallWood 2008 and Bioenergy & Wood Products joint conference will
be held May 13-15, 2008. The theme of this year's conference is "Cutting
Edge Technologies to Optimize Utilization of Smallwood and Woody
Biomass." The conference will provide state-of-the-art information on
small-tree utilization and foster peer-to-peer learning. Enormous
quantities of woody biomass are being generated from thinning
operations, land clearing, and hurricane disasters. These issues drive
the need to create solutions for using low-value and waste wood. This
conference will include an international slate of speakers, including
researchers, material and equipment suppliers, manufacturers, and
end-users.

- PUBLICATIONS Wood Products and Carbon Protocols: Carbon Storage and Law Energy
Intensity Should be Considered The time is right and strong opportunities exist for carbon protocols
and markets for carbon credits to recognize the carbon storage benefits
of wood products. http://dovetailinc.org/reports/pdf/DovetailCarbon0408hz.pdf OR
http://forestrycenter.org/library.cfm?refID=102577 Ecosystem Markets: New Mechanisms to Support Forestry With the growing interest in global warming, climate change, and the
influence that human activities have on our environment, there are
increasing opportunities for market based mechanisms to support
responsible forestry and environmentally beneficial land use decisions.
An increasingly common market-based mechanism is the "carbon credit"
which links marketplace values with the sequestration of carbon. http://dovetailinc.org/reports/pdf/DovetailEcoMkts0308dk.pdf OR
