The meeting will feature three expert speakers who will emphasize different aspects of this central issue. The day opens with Carol Nielsen, a longtime member of the Wisconsin DNR division of forestry. Carol will frame the results of the recently-released “Offspring” Study, an investigation on how Wisconsin’s woodlands are poised to be passed on to the next generation.
A prominent attorney and expert in estate planning, Mark Bradley of the firm Ruder Ware, LLSC in Wausau, will follow Carol. Mark chairs the firm’s Trusts and Estates Practice Group. Mark will cover some of the usual topics such as avoiding probate, protecting land assets, planning for changes in family structures and goals, and keeping the current landowners’ open space and conservation goals in perpetuity. He will also highlight some of the proposed changes in the estate and tax laws, and how they might possibly affect landowners who are in various life circumstances. Once interesting situation he will cover will include differences for landowners depending on whether they live in Wisconsin or Michigan.
Rodney Walter, of Nature Conservancy’s Madison office will be the third speaker on the program. Rod has worked for TNC since 2001, currently serving as TNC’s Director of Habitat Protection. In his presentation for PIF Rod will focus on landowner protection strategies, outlining several options for landowners looking to protect pieces of land. These will include real estate tools such as easements, deed restrictions, and fee purchases, and the role that land trusts play in that process.
